Millimeter and Submillimeter Observations from the South Pole
نویسنده
چکیده
During the past decade, a year-round observatory has been established at the geographic South Pole by the Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica (CARA). CARA has fielded several millimeterand submillimeter-wave instruments: AST/RO (the Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory, a 1.7-m telescope outfitted with a variety of receivers at frequencies from 230 GHz to 810 GHz, including PoleSTAR, a heterodyne spectrometer array), Python (a degree-scale CMB telescope), Viper (a 2-m telescope which has been outfitted with SPARO, a submillimeter-wave bolometric array polarimeter, ACBAR, a multichannel CMB instrument, and Dos Equis, a HEMT polarimeter), and DASI (the Degree-Angular Scale Interferometer). These instruments have obtained significant results in studies of the interstellar medium and observational cosmology, including detections of the 1◦ acoustic peak in the CMB and the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect. The South Pole environment is unique among observatory sites for unusually low wind speeds, low absolute humidity, and the consistent clarity of the submillimeter sky. The atmosphere is dessicated by cold: at the South Pole’s average annual temperature of -49 C, the partial pressure of saturated water vapor is only 1.2% of what it is at 0 C. The low water vapor levels result in exceptionally low values of sky noise. This is crucial for large-scale observations of faint cosmological sources—for such observations the South Pole is unsurpassed.

The summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the area near Cerro Chajnantor in Chile, and the South Pole are sites of large millimeter or submillimeter wavelength telescopes. We have placed 860 GHz sky brightness monitors at all three sites and present a comparative study of the measured submillimeter brightness due to atmospheric thermal emission. We report the stability of that quantity at each site. 1...
متن کاملEarly Results from SPARO: Instrument Characterization and Polarimetry of NGC 6334
The Submillimeter Polarimeter for Antarctic Remote Observations (SPARO) employs two nineelement arrays of He-cooled bolometers to measure linear polarization at mm. It is operated at the focal l p 450 plane of the Viper telescope, located at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. SPARO obtains better sensitivity to degree-scale polarized submillimeter emission than can be currently achieved wit...

We report measurements of the fluctuations in atmospheric emission (atmospheric noise) above Mauna Kea recorded with Bolocam at 143 and 268 GHz from the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). The 143 GHz data were collected during a 40 night observing run in late 2003, and the 268 GHz observations were made in early 2004 and early 2005 over a total of 60 nights. Below ≃ 0.5 Hz, the data time-...

متن کاملASTE Observations of Warm Gas in Low-mass Protostellar Envelopes: Different Kinematics between Submillimeter and Millimeter Lines
With the ASTE telescope, we have made observations of three low-mass protostellar envelopes around L483, B335, and L723 in the submillimeter CS (J=7–6) and HCN (J=4–3) lines. We detected both the CS and HCN lines toward all the targets, and the typical CS intensity (∼ 1.0 K in TB) is twice higher than that of the HCN line. Mapping observations of L483 in these lines have shown that the submilli...
